Arduous task: Fixing offshore U.S. oil rigs
ABOARD MSV BOTNICA, Gulf of Mexico Gliding gracefully half a mile below sea level, two robotic submarines are part of an unusual repair job intended to restore much needed oil resources to the strained U.S. energy network.
With the help of skilled operators on this industrial-grade ship from Finland, dozens of engineers onshore and a step- by-step manual thicker than a big city phone book, the twin subs, nicknamed Mil-28 and Mag-77, have been replacing a pair of sections of pipelines that were severely dented in Hurricane Katrina.
