Record ethanol production in 2005
No big surprise, we had record ethanol production in the United States last year. The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) reports 3.904 billion gallons of ethanol produced in 2005, an average of 255,000 barrels per day. Production per day increased almost monthly so that in December it was a record 280,000 barrels. But demand is running at an even faster pace. That record December production was still short of the record demand for the month of 310,000 barrels per day.
Currently, there are 95 ethanol plants operating in the country with a 4.3 billion gallons-per-year capacity. There are 34 plants and nine expansions under construction that will add another 2.1 billion gallons to the annual production capacity.
